ISLab

Welcome to the website of the Intelligent systems Lab!

The Intelligent Systems Laboratory (ISLab) is part of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Antwerp.

Research

The research focus of ISLab is fundamental and applied machine learning, with applications in bioinformatics and related areas. Recent work includes the Prediction of kinase-specific phosphorylation sites using Condition Random Fields, Bioinformatics (Full Text, pdf). Previous work includes the SynTReN network generator (see project page for more info).

Since 2007, ISLab is mainly active in the application of modeling and simulation techniques to proteome data and related (high throughput) molecular data. Current research includes inference of protein regulatory networks, protein motifs and pattern detection in mass spectrometry based protein datasets within the scope of the inter-universitary BioFrame project.

People

The current group members are Thanh Hai Dang (PhD student), Kim Henderickx (PhD student), Koen Van Leemput (PhD student), Kris Laukens (postdoc and daily supervision) and Alain Verschoren (professor, lab director). Former group members include Bart Naudts (post-doc), Piet van Remortel (postdoc) and Elmer Fernández (visiting postdoc). Dr. Bart Naudts nowadays runs Powerscan, a business intelligence company dedicated to web-mining.
